The DestTestKernal solution can test the entire 64K of available memory in your Commodore 64 using the same March-B algorithm as the DesTestMAX 4K testing cartridge.

While your Commodore 64 doesn’t need to be fully working in order to run DesTestKernal, the CPU, VIC-II and PLA, functional. The BASIC ROM, character ROM, SID and CIAs are not required.

Unlike the DesTestMAX, DesTestFull or the DesTestMAX-Switch, this solution is not a cartridge but a replacement kernal ROM for your C64.  This does require that the existing kernal ROM in your machine be unsoldered and replaced with a socket and/or ROM switching solution.

Use of this kernal version of DesTest is a bit more of a hassle than the cartridge solutions, but can be more than worth it.  Not only can it test the entire 64K of memory all in one go, but will also verify the checksums of the BASIC and character ROMs.  If cartridge-based diagnostics aren't quite working - this one just might.
